Why did I become a journalist?

May 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

That is a question I ask myself multiple times a day. When I entered college I surprisingly had my career path mapped out. I wanted to become a journalist and write news stories. There was something about facts that got me excited. Two years ago when I graduated from college at 21-years-old instead of being this lost, confused, jobless graduate; I felt like I figured it all out. I had a job. I was doing freelance writing on the side. I felt pretty secure. Now I’m at a weird crossroad and I feel unbelievably lost.

As the print media industry faces trying times, I don’t quite feel like I need to throw in the towel and find another profession to learn all over again. Sure, I plan to enroll in graduate school soon but I don’t intend on quitting journalism. Instead, I plan on immersing myself in new media. I write for print, but I’m also a very part-time web mistress for a local non-profit. And, I’m interested in social media tools and journalism. I’m trying to appeal to a wider media market. Plus, with each new writing assignment I’m given I catch a glimpse of other areas of interest in my field. So, I’m making the most of this point of my life and career.

Thus, I deleted all my random subject related blog posts — which were all my posts — to solely focus on my journalistic efforts. Of course, there are quite a few things that encompass my writing schedule that’ll probably find their way on here, too.  Although I write a ton as it is I’m finding that if a story doesn’t get picked up, or if I simply have too much to fit into a small space it’ll find its way on here.

In essence, I decided to become a journalist because I think everyone has amazing stories to tell. I’m just trying to do my part by uncovering them.
